Our Practice

BrightBlack is a small and carefully run architectural practice in Johannesburg, that is versed in high-end residential developments and interesting commercial projects. The practice focuses on a few simple design principles – sustainability, context, and client brief. The BrightBlack duo works hard to ensure that each building it produces is embedded in its context, by taking cues from the landscape, the topography, the sun and the view.

BrightBlack is not a practice conversant in any particular architectural style but prefers to rather root its aesthetic in the tectonics of site, the composition of materials and texture and the paradox of light and shadow.

The practice prides itself on a personalised service where the journey through the design process, technical resolution and site management is cared for by its 2 principals. To achieve this attribute, both principals immerse themselves in every aspect of their projects and meticulously lead them all to completion.

BrightBlack has resisted the urge to grow the practice in the traditional sense rather opting for a fully engaged and high-quality end product.

Our Studio

BrightBlack Architecture was formed in 2012 in a collaboration of two young and impassioned Architectural professionals – Alistair van Rooyen and Robyn Arnot.
